Does your smart garden require a special type of water?

We’re sometimes asked whether smart gardens require a special type of water in order to function optimally. The good news is no they don’t! You’ll be pleased to know we recommend using regular tap water. Here at our Click & Grow office, we water our smart gardens using both tap water and water straight from the hose.

Tap water is easily accessible and has a low cost. Most areas have water quality standards that regulate drinking water. As a rule of thumb, if your tap water is drinkable then it’s also good for your Click & Grow plants.

When using tap water, you can reduce calcium or limestone buildup around your wicks by following these steps:

• Fill the smart garden’s tank so that 2/3 of the wick is always in water. This prolongs the life of the wick and helps prevent a buildup of minerals.

• Never leave your plant cups empty in your smart garden. Always plant new plant pods as soon as possible. This ensures that water is always flowing through the wicks and minerals can not build up so easily.

If you’re looking for a way to cut down on your utility bill, rainwater is also fine to use. There are several ways you could collect rainwater. The most common method would be installing a rainwater barrel outside your home or in your outdoor garden

Bonus tips for improving the quality of your irrigation water

• Check the pH level of your water using a pH meter, pH paper or litmus paper. A pH lower than 7.0, or neutral, is acidic, while a pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline. Plants tend to thrive with a pH of approximately 5.5 to 6.5.

• Allow water to settle in a bucket for a couple of days before use. Solids will precipitate to the bottom. When pouring out, use all the water except the contents at the very bottom.
