Kids in the Kitchen - Creamy Garlic & Herb Dip with Fresh Parsley & Chives

Kids in the Kitchen

Kids in the Kitchen is our new blog series, where in collaboration with Little Kitchen Academy, we’re sharing recipes and tips for getting kids interested in food and involved in the kitchen.

Creamy Garlic & Herb Dip Featuring Fresh Parsley and Chives

This Garlic & Herb Dip is a simple yet flavorful recipe that Little Kitchen Academy students love making and sharing. It’s creamy, tangy, and versatile, ideal as a dip for vegetables or crackers, or even as a spread for wraps and sandwiches. The recipe also offers a great opportunity for children to explore new herbs and practice fine motor skills like grating, chopping, and mixing.

Parsley brings a clean, earthy note, while chives contribute a subtle sharpness with just a hint of garlic—a beautiful balance in every bite.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Chill time (optional): 15–30 minutes

Serves: 4–6 as a dip

INGREDIENTS:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise

  • ¼ cup sour cream

  • ¼ small onion, finely grated

  • ½ tbsp dried parsley or 1 sprig fresh parsley (chopped)

  • ½ tbsp dried chives or 2–3 sprigs fresh chives (chopped)

  • ¼ tsp dried tarragon

  • ¼ tsp garlic powder

  • ⅛ tsp paprika

WHAT ELSE YOU’LL NEED:

  • Small mixing bowl

  • Spoon or spatula

  • Grater

  • Cutting board and knife

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic powder, and paprika. Stir until smooth and fully blended.

Using a grater, finely grate ¼ of a small onion and stir it into the mixture. Grating helps the onion incorporate smoothly without any large pieces.

Chop the parsley and chives into fine pieces and add them to the bowl.

Stir well to combine all ingredients. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Optional: Chill the dip for 15–30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Serve with:

  • Carrot, cucumber, or bell pepper sticks

  • Warm pita wedges or seeded crackers

  • Crispy roasted potatoes or baked sweet potato fries

This dip is a great entry point into herb identification, knife skills, and the importance of balancing flavors. Whether served with fresh-cut veggies or alongside another dish, it’s a refreshing and satisfying addition to the table.

Enjoy!
