Winter Houseplant Care: 6 Quick Tips
Try these suggestions to help your houseplants make it through the cold, short days of winter.
1. Raise the humidity if necessary
If you have houseplants that are native to the tropics, you’ll know that they enjoy humid conditions. During the winter, humidity levels can drop quite steeply in your home.
One way to help your tropical plants is by grouping them together in a single area to slightly increase humidity levels. Alternatively, you could invest in a plant humidifier.
2. Maximise light
The angle of the sun is lower during winter, meaning sunlight is less intense. As a result, most plants will naturally grow at a slower pace and not produce as many new flowers or leaves.
If you prefer your plants to be more active during the winter months, it’s worth investing in grow lights to help stimulate photosynthesis.
3. Monitor the temperature
If possible, try to keep your plants away from cold drafts and heat sources such as fireplaces, underfloor heating, and radiators. Extreme fluctuations in temperature can be harmful for plants, no matter the season.
4. Water less frequently
Plants are more dormant during the winter than at any other time of the year. If your air is humidified, your plants should be able to go slightly longer without watering.
Check if the soil is dry a few inches below the surface - if so, then it’s time to water.
5. Avoid repotting until springtime
The process of being transplanted can be stressful for plants. They need all the energy they have to cope through the cold, dark winter months. If possible, wait until spring to repot.
6. Clean houseplants’ leaves
Windows are closed during the winter and this can cause more dust to circulate in the home. Dusty leaves can prevent plants from absorbing whatever precious little sunlight there is available.
Lightly brush the dust off your houseplants’ leaves one a month.
